Sovrano Limoncello: The Vest of NZ

12 Mar 2021

Spanning five generations, Andrea and Marzia Loggia are part of a rich history in liqueur making.

The couple based in Kerikeri, emigrated to New Zealand from Italy in 2007, with a mission to create the best and finest Limoncello Liqueur in New Zealand.

“We emigrated to New Zealand indefinitely in 2007 from Italy, with the desire to start a limoncello business," says Andrea.

"We have been making Limoncello and many other liqueurs for generations in my family, and Marzia’s family has been making wine since 1880.”

In 2009, after discovering the best lemons in the Bay of Islands and best pure alcohol in the country they launched Sovrano Limoncello.

While delicious on its own, Sovrano Limoncello is a versatile liqueur. It’s the perfect touch to cocktails and desserts - recipes ideas can be found on their website.

Going global

After successfully launching Sovrano Limoncello, Andrea and Marzia continued to develop other liqueurs including Limoncello Cream, Orangello and Orangello Cream, made with New Zealand milk and local oranges grown in Kerikeri.

They took their Limoncello global, taking home a vast number of awards from around the globe, and exporting the product to the likes of Australia, China and the United States.

With ambition to continue to expand their business, and optimism that the economy will bounce back after the current COVID-19 pandemic, Andrea and Marzia recently purchased a local winery.

“We have now made an unconditional offer on Ake Ake Vineyard and Restaurant located in Kerikeri at 165 Waimate North Road, as we believe the economy will soon recover,” says Andrea.

Italian + Kiwi

With their Italian roots and recipes along with finest New Zealand grown citrus, Sovrano Limoncello is a true mix of Italian and New Zealand provenance.

In 2020, Sovrano Limoncello joined Buy New Zealand Made, obtaining a licence to use the “New Zealand Made” Kiwi trademark.

“We joined Buy New Zealand Made as I believe it was a good way to promote New Zealand made product,” says Andrea.

Proudly displaying their certificate on social media, Andrea believes it provides clarity that their product is of New Zealand origin.

“New Zealand Made makes the customers aware, despite the Italian trading name, it is actually made in New Zealand,” says Andrea.

“We have noticed a sales increase through our website since using the Kiwi trademark.”
