Ecology & Co: Changing what it means to be social

27 Jan 2021

Ecology & Co are a social enterprise and artisan producers of distilled alcohol-free spirits, on a journey to change what it means to be social.

The story of Ecology & Co began with the dilemma of wanting to enjoy alcohol and the flavour sensations, without experiencing some of the negative consequences.

Ecology & Co-Founder Diana Miller explains, “Not too long ago we were socially challenged. You see, as our lifestyles became healthier, entertaining became harder. Finding a grown-up drink that gave us the same fulfilling experience as our alcohol-filled favourites, was a lost cause.”

“Part of the story is that when I drink more than a glass of alcohol I struggle with poor sleep quality and I hate sweet drinks like juice and soda, which is all you ever get offered when you don’t want more alcohol in most places,” Diana said.

Diana’s husband, Will, then a hobby distiller and now certified, got to work. Like all good Kiwi business stories, they started in the kitchen and now boast their own alcohol-free distillery.

Fragrant aromatics & zesty spices

Consciously crafting the spirits from traditional gin botanicals and sophisticated spice blends in New Zealand is an integral part of their brand and products.

The finest botanical ingredients are selected, then individually distilled without using alcohol. What might seem like a painstaking process, allows them to finely tune the flavour profile of each bottle.

London Dry is a traditional blend of juniper, coriander and lemon, with floral and pine notes for a familiar, fragrant taste and a long, refreshing finish.

Asian Spice is a complex blend of cardamom, cassia, sweet basil and citrus. Earthy black pepper notes round off the flavour profile for a soft-spiced, warm, sensual finish.

Delicious alcohol-free cocktail recipes incorporating London Dry and Asian Spice can be found on Ecology & Co’s website, showcasing the endless alcohol-free possibilities.

Proudly New Zealand Made

Ecology & Co bottles proudly carry the “New Zealand Made” Kiwi trademark, in the form of 10mm wide triangle stickers.

Diana explains why they joined Buy New Zealand Made to use the Kiwi trademark: “Consumers can see that we are made here and also to show on our products sold in export markets where we come from.”

“Buyers as well as customers are looking for more Kiwi products, it has opened up new ranging opportunities to us,” Diana said.
